Accessory guide
Sanding Discs, Sanding Belts & Sandpaper
Start with the surface and the next result: remove an old layer, smooth the surface, or polish it. Then choose a hand abrasive, machine sheet or disc, flap abrasive, or polishing accessory that suits the job.
[9] [12] [10] [13] [15]This guide covers hand sanding, sheets and discs, flap abrasives and polishing. Use the exact machine and accessory instructions for powered work.

Choose the format for the surface
Hand sanding: flat edges or contours
A foam block is useful when you want a hand-held abrasive. Bosch’s S471 is intended for flats and edges. For a curved profile, compare the more flexible S473 contour sponge, which adapts to the workpiece. Choose its grade for the removal or finishing stage, as well as its shape.
[8] [9]Sheets and discs for a machine
Match the abrasive format to the machine. The E466 disc is for random orbital sanders; F460 sheets are listed for delta sanders and oscillating multitools. F460 uses hook-and-loop attachment, where the sheet grips the backing pad. A useful grit does not make a different pad shape fit.
[10] [12]Flap abrasives for metal work
A flap abrasive has overlapping abrasive pieces rather than one paper sheet. The X431 example is intended for finishing metal edges, welded seams and coarse-sanded surfaces. The X571 example is a metal-grinding flap disc for small angle grinders. Check the exact tool designation and mounting; do not substitute either for a paper disc on a random orbital sander.
[13] [14] [10]Polishing and waxing
Choose an accessory made for polishing when that is the next task. Bosch’s cited polishing sponge is for a polisher and suitable polish or surface-sealing agents on flat or curved surfaces. It is a different accessory choice from an abrasive used to remove old paint.
[15] [12]Choose the grade for this stage
Coarse removal, then finer work
Grit describes the abrasive grade. Bosch’s sanding guidance starts coarse and progresses finer; the right starting point depends on the surface and intended finish. Do not buy a pack solely because it has the same shape as your old sheet: compare both the material and the grade.
[16] [10]Example: rough wood versus final finishing
The GEX 125-1 A/AE wood table lists 40/60 for coarse pre-sanding and 180/240 for fine finishing. Within that guidance, lower numbers mean coarser abrasion and higher numbers mean finer work. Choose the stage your surface needs; this is not a compulsory starting grade or universal sequence.
[18]Another choice: profile or flat surface
Hand-sanding a curved wooden profile
Compare a flexible contour sponge such as S473 when the abrasive needs to follow the profile. For flat edges, S471 has a different intended shape. This is a hand-sanding choice, so you are selecting grip, flexibility and grade rather than a machine mounting.
[9] [8]Replacing a machine disc
Read the size and hole pattern as well as the grit. The E466 range includes a 125 mm/eight-hole format and a 150 mm/six-hole format. They illustrate why a matching product name or grit is not enough: choose the format required by the exact backing pad.
[10] [11]Five checks before buying
1 Material and job
Separate sanding wood or paint, finishing metal, and polishing. Read the exact abrasive’s material/application list before choosing a grade.
[12] [10] [13] [15]2 Format and attachment
For sheets/discs, compare pad shape, diameter, attachment and extraction-hole pattern. For flap abrasives or polishing accessories, check their bore, shank or thread and intended machine instead. These are different mounting systems.
[10] [11] [12] [14] [15]3 Grade and working stage
Buy the grade needed now: removal, preparation or finish. A multi-grade hand-sanding set can cover several stages; repeated sheets of one grit are a refill, not a progression through those stages.
[8] [9] [16]4 Rated speed
For flap discs, the accessory speed rating must meet or exceed the tool’s marked maximum. Machine and mounting checks still apply.
[7] [14] [13]5 Dust and machine limits
Dust from lead-containing coatings, some woods, minerals and metal can harm health. Use material-appropriate extraction and respiratory protection. The GEX 125-1 A/AE is dry-sanding only; a washable sponge does not permit powered wet sanding.
[18] [9]Pro tips & practical checks
Do
Fit the sheet cleanly
For the GEX 125-1 A/AE, unplug before changes, clear dust from the pad and align the sheet’s extraction holes. Secure the workpiece.
[18]Treat collected dust as a hazard
For that GEX, empty the dust collector before work breaks. Its manual warns that sanding dust can ignite, particularly when hot or mixed with coating residues.
[18]Don’t
Try to compensate with extra pressure
On the GEX 125-1 A/AE, pressing harder increases wear rather than sanding capacity. Do not reuse a sheet that has sanded metal on other materials.
[18]Choose only by colour or product name
Read the grade and format. Bosch colour-codes its cited hand sponges for work stages, but that product-specific coding is not a universal colour chart for every abrasive.
