Know Your Tool

Measuring Tools: Choose the Right Tool for the Job

Start with the job: measure a distance, align an installation or investigate a surface. Then check the exact model, its limits and the accessories it needs.

A practical guide to the 16 measuring-tool families on Bosch Professional India. Features vary by model; this guide does not confirm Etool stock or a particular tool-and-accessory match.

Choose by the job

Measure a distance

A room dimension and a route on the ground call for different approaches.

Measure a distance

Laser measures

Choose for point-to-point dimensions. Check the model’s measuring range and accuracy, then choose the functions you need.

Check the reference point and measurement conditions in its manual.

[2]

Measure along a route

Measuring wheels

Choose for measuring a distance by rolling along the ground. Compare the wheel, readout and measuring range.

Plan a clear route and follow the model’s measuring method.

[3]

Align, level and transfer

Choose the reference you need: a line, a point, a level or an angle.

Line up a row

Line lasers

Project horizontal or vertical reference lines for alignment. The number and layout of lines vary by model.

Compare working range, self-levelling range and receiver support.

[4]

Use lines and points

Combi lasers

Combine reference lines with plumb points when you need both levelling and point transfer.

Check the actual line-and-point layout before choosing.

[5]

Transfer a reference point

Point lasers

Transfer points, including between floor and ceiling. Check the point arrangement required for your job.

A point laser does not replace a continuous reference line.

[6]

Level across a work area

Rotation lasers

Consider for site levelling and alignment indoors or outdoors. Check the stated range and matching receiver.

Check the laser class. GRL 350 HV is class 3R.

[7][18]

Check levels on site

Optical levels

Consider for optical levelling on construction sites. Compare magnification and stated levelling accuracy.

Check the required tripod and measuring staff separately.

[8]

Check an angle or slope

Angle measurers and inclinometers

An angle measurer checks an angle; an inclinometer checks an incline. Choose for the measurement your fitting or layout needs.

Compare measuring range, accuracy and tool length.

[9]

Inspect and investigate

Match the instrument to the question. A reading or image has limits.

Investigate before drilling

Detectors

Help locate specified objects behind a surface. Detectable materials and detection depth depend on the exact model and conditions.

A clear scan does not prove hidden services are absent.

[10][19]

Compare surface temperatures

Thermo cameras & detectors

A thermal camera shows temperature patterns; an infrared thermometer measures surface temperature over a measuring area.

Cool-looking colours do not prove a surface is safe to touch.

[11][20][23]

See a hard-to-reach area

Inspection cameras

Use a camera probe to inspect an accessible opening or cavity. Compare probe access, cable length and recording features.

It shows the camera’s view, not everything behind a wall.

[12]

Check for AC voltage indications

Electrical testers

Non-contact voltage testers help qualified users check for AC voltage indications within the model’s specified limits.

Never use an NCVT to establish absence of voltage.

[13][21]

Assess material moisture

Moisture meters

Check moisture in materials supported by the exact meter. Match the material setting to the wood or building material.

Material moisture and room humidity are different measurements.

[14][22]

Support the setup

Check the exact connection and compatibility before adding accessories.

Pick up a laser reference

Receivers

Use a receiver supported by your laser when the task calls for it, including work in bright conditions.

Line/combi and rotation-laser receivers are not one universal type.

[15]

Set a stable working height

Tripods

Choose a stable support with the working height and mounting thread your measuring tool needs.

Confirm the exact tool-to-tripod connection.

[16]

Complete the measuring setup

Accessories

Check mounts, measuring rods, telescopic poles and other supports against the tool and task.

Laser-viewing glasses help visibility; they are not laser eye protection.

[17][18]

Before you choose

Define the job

Write down what you need to measure or locate, the surface and whether you will work indoors or outdoors.

Read the model’s limits

Check accuracy, operating range, conditions and intended use. A headline maximum is not a promise for every job.

Check the complete setup

Confirm power supply, mounts, receiver and accessories from the model’s instructions and exact pack contents.

Know the limits before you use it

Lasers: check the class

Do not aim a beam at people or animals or look into it. GRL 350 HV is class 3R: its instructions require operators familiar with laser equipment and a guarded or screened beam area. Laser-viewing glasses are not protective goggles.

[18]

Scanning is one check

A detector cannot guarantee that hidden services are absent. Use further information, such as construction plans, before drilling, sawing or routing. Surface materials, moisture and nearby fields can affect results. Before drilling, sawing or routing, have a qualified person safely isolate relevant electrical cables and verify that they are de-energised; a scanner or NCVT is not that verification.

[19]

Temperature is not touch permission

A cool colour or low reading can be misleading. Check emissivity and measuring conditions; a hot surface can still cause burns. Stand back from very hot objects.

[20][23]

Electrical checks need qualified users

An NCVT must not be used to prove absence of voltage. A missing light or sound does not prove a circuit is dead. Follow the tester’s manual and safe electrical working practices.

[21]

Good working habits

Do

Read the manual before use. Carry out the checks specified for that model; follow its instructions after a drop or temperature change. Keep the instrument and its measuring surfaces clean.

Don’t

Treat a detector as permission to drill, a thermal image as permission to touch, or an NCVT as proof that a circuit is dead. Don’t assume every laser uses the same safety class.

Common questions

Do I need a laser measure or a line laser?

Choose a laser measure for distances. Choose a line laser to project an alignment reference. Check the exact model’s functions.

[2][4]

Can any receiver work with any laser?

No. Check the receiver listed for the exact laser. Bosch India separates receivers for line/combi lasers and rotation lasers.

[15]

Does “no object found” mean it is safe to drill?

No. Detection has technological and environmental limits. Check further information, including available construction plans.

[19]

Is room humidity the same as material moisture?

No. Material moisture concerns the material being tested; relative humidity concerns the surrounding air. Check which measurement your meter provides.
