Bosch GDR 18V-215 vs GDR 18V-220 C vs GDX 18V-285

Choose the tool holder first. The two GDR models use a 1/4-inch internal hex holder for suitable screwdriving accessories. The GDX 18V-285 adds a 1/2-inch external square drive for suitable impact sockets, so it covers screwdriving and bolting with one dual-interface tool. Among the GDR models, the 18V-215 offers two speed settings and preset wood/metal modes; the 18V-220 C adds three speed settings and adjustable modes. [1], [2]

Quick choice by job

  • Mostly screwdriving in wood or sheet metal: shortlist GDR 18V-215 when you want two selectable speed levels and its preset Auto Slow-down/Auto Shut-off modes.
  • More speed choices and adjustable screw modes: shortlist GDR 18V-220 C. Its additional control features are a clearer reason to consider it than the small difference between the published 215 Nm and 220 Nm ratings.
  • Alternating between screws and socket-driven nuts or bolts: shortlist GDX 18V-285 for its hex-plus-square holder. Verify the socket, fastener specification and required final torque.
  • An application with a specified final tightening torque: none of these replaces torque-wrench verification. Plan the fastening procedure around the joint specification, not the impact driver's headline Nm value.

Choose by access, accessory fit, fastening task and the battery kit you will use. [3] [2] [4]

Sources: GDR 215/GDX 285 manual, pp9–13 [1]; GDR 220 C manual, pp16–19 [5]; level-specific ranges cross-checked against GDR 215 [3], GDR 220 C [2] and GDX 285 [4] India technical tables.

Compare the ratings with their conditions. The manuals specify 20–25 °C for these performance measurements and use different battery packs, shown in the table. The GDX’s 285 Nm tightening and 500 Nm loosening ratings describe different tasks. Neither guarantees the torque achieved at every joint. The machine-screw ranges are not socket widths, universal wood-screw diameters or approval for every fastener grade.

What the terms mean

  • Impact driver: in this comparison, a hex-holder fastening tool. The impact mechanism produces rotary impulses under load. It is not a hammer drill's masonry-drilling function.
  • Dual holder: the GDX has two accessory interfaces in the tool holder. The 1/4-inch hex is for suitable hex-shank accessories; the 1/2-inch square is for suitable square-drive impact sockets. A 1/4-inch square socket is not interchangeable with a 1/4-inch hex bit.
  • Tightening torque: the published fastening-direction rating. Actual joint torque depends on factors including the joint, fastener, lubrication and impact duration.
  • Breakaway or loosening torque: a loosening-direction rating. It does not describe the permitted final tightening torque of the fastener.
  • rpm and bpm: rpm describes rotational speed; bpm describes impact frequency. A higher number alone does not establish faster completion of your job.
  • Speed/application modes: operating controls that change tool behaviour. They are not a calibrated torque-wrench setting or a guarantee against overtightening.

These definitions follow the separately labelled quantities and operating descriptions in the GDR 215/GDX 285 manual [1] and GDR 220 C manual [5].

GDR 18V-215: two speed levels and preset assistance

The practical attraction is its two speed levels plus separate wood and metal application modes. Auto Slow-down reduces speed during the tightening phase; Auto Shut-off is intended to stop during the specified screwdriving operation. For Auto Slow-down and Auto Shut-off to activate, the manual requires the trigger to be fully pressed and the screw to be driven in completely. Test the selected mode on a representative piece before relying on the finish. In the wood mode, a screw shorter than 50 mm may not trigger slowdown in time if no impact is detected; speed preselection is unavailable in that mode. Mode assistance is not a promise that screw heads or material cannot be damaged. [1]

When to choose it: shortlist it for hex-bit fastening when two speed choices and the preset modes suit your work. Check the battery, charger and case included in the Etool kit before ordering.

GDR 18V-215 do's and don'ts

  • Do: choose the operating mode for the material and fastener, and confirm its behaviour in a suitable trial. In normal operation, select the speed level you need; wood Auto Slow-down does not allow speed preselection.
  • Do: check the ten-digit tool type before choosing single-ended or double-ended bits. The manual gives different allowed retention lengths for different type suffixes.
  • Don't: assume that every 1/4-inch bit, or every double-ended bit, fits just because its hex size matches.
  • Don't: read the generic 0–2,100 rpm India-page field as the tool's highest speed; it is the first-level range. The second level reaches 3,300 rpm.

GDR 18V-220 C: more control choices and optional connectivity

The India page identifies a brushless motor, a 113 mm head length, one-handed bit insertion and two worklights. Three speed levels and A/B modes are its central functional differences here. The manual supports transferring settings through a GCY 42 or GCY 42 NC Bluetooth Low Energy module; module inclusion in Etool's sale item has not been established. [2], [5]

When to choose it: consider it when three speed choices, adjustable mode behaviour and compact access matter to your work. Confirm the complete length with your chosen bit or holder; the head-length figure does not include every accessory arrangement. The published 220 Nm versus 215 Nm difference is not evidence of a meaningful real-world productivity advantage.

Check the kit: the manufacturer’s GDR 18V-220 C Solo configuration excludes a battery and charger. Check the linked Etool listing’s included items, and confirm the Bluetooth module separately if you need app settings. [6] [2]

GDR 18V-220 C do's and don'ts

  • Do: insert the application tool fully and check that it clicks into place securely.
  • Do: distinguish the tool's onboard modes from app customisation, and check the required Bluetooth module and its separate instructions.
  • Don't: assume the letter C means the connectivity module comes in the Etool box.
  • Don't: use speed-level or mode selection as proof that the joint has reached its specified torque.

GDR 18V-220 C FAQs

Does it need a phone for normal fastening?

The manual describes onboard speed and mode buttons. App functions add adjustment and configuration capabilities with the specified module; ordinary tool operation is described separately.

Does it accept 1/2-inch sockets directly?

No. Its holder is 1/4-inch internal hex. The GDX 18V-285 is the dual-holder model in this comparison. Do not infer that an unverified adapter makes the two tools equivalent.

GDX 18V-285: screws and square-drive bolting

The dual holder is the main reason to compare the GDX with these GDR drivers. It provides a direct square-drive interface for suitable 1/2-inch impact sockets as well as the internal hex. The manual specifies two speed levels and two application modes: ABR for the relevant reverse nut-releasing operation, and Auto Shut-off for metal screwdriving. ABR is available only in anticlockwise operation. Auto Shut-off requires the trigger to be fully pressed and the screw to be driven in completely; it is not a partial-trigger guarantee. [4], [1]

When to choose it: shortlist it if you genuinely alternate between hex-bit screwdriving and socket work. Check the fastener's specified torque and the accessory's suitability before choosing it for a particular bolting task. The headline breakaway figure is not assurance that it will loosen every corroded, seized or previously over-tightened fastener.

Check the kit: GDX 18V-285 is offered in battery-kit and Solo configurations. Check whether the linked Etool option includes batteries, a charger and a case before comparing its price with another kit. [6]

GDX 18V-285 do's and don'ts

  • Do: use an impact-rated socket with the correct 1/2-inch square interface and correct size for the fastener, and check secure retention.
  • Do: match hex-bit retention to the exact tool type; the manual's type-specific restrictions also apply to this model.
  • Don't: substitute an ordinary hand-ratchet socket merely because its drive size matches. The manual warns that some application tools cannot withstand this tool's torque.
  • Don't: use 500 Nm as the tightening rating. Keep 285 Nm maximum tightening and 500 Nm maximum loosening/breakaway clearly separated, and verify final torque with a suitable calibrated torque wrench.

GDX 18V-285 FAQs

Can it use both driver bits and sockets without a square-drive adapter?

It has both interfaces built into the holder. Each accessory still needs the correct dimensions, retention and impact rating. A hex bit and a socket are separate accessories.

Can I finish wheel nuts or another critical joint using its mode alone?

Do not use the mode or catalogue rating as final-torque verification. Follow the vehicle/equipment or joint manufacturer's specified procedure and verify the final tightening torque using a suitable calibrated torque wrench. This guide does not approve a particular critical fastening application.

Batteries, chargers and accessories

The manuals for these three models list Bosch Professional GBA 18V and ProCORE18V battery families. Check the exact battery and charger against the relevant instructions; an “18 V” label alone does not establish compatibility. Compare the complete setup you will use rather than assuming the manual’s test battery comes with the tool. [1] [5]

Check bits and sockets separately. Match the accessory’s dimensions, retention and impact rating to the exact tool type. For the GDX’s square drive, use a suitable 1/2-inch impact socket. Do not assume that hand-ratchet sockets, general drill-bit sets or every hex bit are suitable. [1]; [5].

Connectivity accessory: app adjustment on the GDR 18V-220 C requires the specified GCY 42 or GCY 42 NC module. Confirm the compatible module and whether it is included before making an app-dependent buying decision. [5].

Safe-use checklist before the first fastener

  • Read the manual for the exact tool type and the battery, charger and accessory instructions.
  • Wear eye protection and suitable hearing protection; secure the workpiece and maintain a firm grip.
  • Check for hidden services where a fastener could contact wiring. Use the insulated grip surfaces as directed.
  • Remove the battery before fitting accessories. Check retention before starting, and place the bit/socket on the fastener with the tool switched off.
  • Select the appropriate mode and validate the result on a representative non-critical joint or sample.
  • Establish the required fastening torque from the joint specification. Verify achieved torque with a suitable calibrated torque wrench; do not convert an impact time or speed setting into a certified result.
  • Stop for faults, damage or overheating and follow the manual's response. Keep batteries dry and use specified compatible chargers.

These selected reminders do not replace the full safety instructions, job-specific training or the fastening specification. [1], [5]

What to confirm before ordering in India

Exact model: check the tool’s type number against the manual, especially before choosing bits or spare parts.

Included items: check the battery, charger, case and accessories for the exact option you select. A product image does not establish what is in the box. Check that the charger’s input rating and plug suit your mains supply. [6]

Price and stock: check the current product page and compare complete-kit costs, including any battery and charger you still need.

Both “Buy Now” and “Add to Cart” links in this guide open the exact Etool product page so you can review the selected item. They do not automatically add an item or start payment.

Comparison FAQs

Which is best for wood screws?

For hex-bit fastening, compare the GDR 215’s preset wood mode with the GDR 220 C’s extra speed level and adjustable modes. Match the screw, timber, pilot-hole requirement and bit first. A maximum machine-screw range does not approve every wood screw.

Is the GDX 285 automatically better because its Nm figure is larger?

No. Its square-drive option may be useful for bolting, while the GDR models have a dedicated hex holder. The ratings also use different battery packs. Choose by the holder, operating modes and fastening requirement.

Are the GDR 215 and GDR 220 C torque settings like a drill clutch?

Treat them as the documented speed/torque operating levels and application modes. The manuals still require torque-wrench checking. They do not establish a calibrated clutch setting for delivering an exact chosen Nm value at every joint.

Can these replace a drill for making holes?

This comparison covers the manuals' fastening use. It does not endorse general-purpose hole drilling, masonry drilling or fitting an arbitrary chuck. Use an appropriate drill and manufacturer-approved accessories for the hole-making task.

Can I use the same bits in all three?

A shared 1/4-inch hex size is only one requirement. The GDR 215/GDX 285 manual specifies retention dimensions by tool type. Match the accessory to your tool and check its secure retention and impact suitability. [1]; [5].

Does Auto Shut-off prevent overtightening in every material?

No universal guarantee is established. The modes have described operating conditions, and achieved torque varies with the joint. Validate mode behaviour and follow the specified fastening procedure.
